Water in your basement? What to do in the first 24 hours.

Whether it comes from a burst pipe, a failed water heater or a heavy storm, water in your home is stressful. What happens in the first day makes a real difference in how much can be saved, so here is where to start.

1. Make it safe

• If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, stay out and call your utility or an electrician first.
• Shut off the water at the main valve if the source is a pipe or appliance.
• Watch for slippery floors and sagging ceilings.

2. Document everything

Before you move anything, take photos and video of the water, the source and anything damaged. Your insurance company will want to see it.

3. Move what you can

• Lift furniture off wet carpet and put foil or wood blocks under the legs.
• Move rugs, papers, photos and electronics to a dry area.
• Open windows if the weather allows, and run fans to keep air moving.

4. Don’t wait on the drying
